Zoya Akhtar & Reema Kagti, after giving us the best movie of 2019 (Gully Boy), team up to make the best ‘real to life’ web series I ever saw. Made In Heaven is the perfect antithesis to the recent Bollywood flick Thappad. After Thappad’s release, social media went berserk on a preachy narrative with people even defending that one slap is enough to divorce a spouse. Made In Heaven is a perfect antidote and true mirror to life that showcases why marriages actually stay as a compromise. That each individual human being has layers of dark secrets, vile, lies, insecurities, uncontrollable greed and deceit in them. Which they exercise throughout the span of their lives.
Tara and Karan are two wedding planners who need to tackle multitude of issues at every wedding – ranging from spouses cheating, child molestation, last minute dowry demands, to the travails and trials of being a gay, honour killing, utter loneliness and more. Each member of the wedding planning team also have their own lives all messed up. In one scene, the wedding planner tells the bride ‘It’s fine if he cheated on you; we all f$ck up; we all make mistakes..just move on, adjust .. soon your in-laws will die and you will inherit the fifty crores. It’s fifty crores. That’s a lot of money to make for a slight adjustment.’
The series is great piece of work on several fronts – (easily the best visual product on LGBT rights) each character and situation is dissected in-depth and the nine episodes have a strong theme of karma – whatever you do, comes back to haunt you. Arjun Mathur, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jim Sarbh, Shashank Arora, Shivani Raghuvanshi are top draws .. aided by delightful cameos from Vijay Raaz, Deepti Naval, Manjot Singh, Kalki Koechlin and many more. This series is a must watch. Twice. You will feel for every character in this web series. I can’t wait for Season 2.
